FAQs on Everest Base Camp Trekking (14 Days)

How high is the Everest’s Base Camp?

Fly from Kathmandu(1310m) to Lukla (2860m) via small plane (17-19 people occupy), takes about 30 minutes; and start trekking further to the south face of Mount Everest Base Camp (EBC) at an altitude of 5380m or 17600ft above sea level.

How difficult/Challenging this trek is? Does it fit to any trekkers?

This trek is a kind of moderate level of trekking. The trek has rolling flats and steep ascends but it is generally manageable for the trekker of any ages with little trekking experience. The trekker has to be physically fit, though. However, it is advised to have some training before planning this EBC Trek in order to adjust with high altitude sickness. There is no exact age limit for this trekking as seniors and minimum age people can still do it but it is suggested to be aware of the route map, itinerary, difficulty, altitude, action challenges, fitness, medications, requirements and any other advice from the blogs or news. Check out our Pre-Departure information, Trekking information  while planning this EBC Trek  in Nepal.

How far or long does it take to reach to the EBC?

The total Everest Base Camp Trek Distance  is 62 Kilometers or 38.58 miles. It will take 7 to 8 days to reach Everest Base Camp (EBC) and 3-4 days to return to Lukla. Each day you will be walking less than 8-10 Kilometers, the high you trek, your speed of walking will get slower. Normally, trek to EBC is slower because of high altitude and possibility of AMS, you will need to adjust to the new altitudes. It is suggested to have some spare days in Kathmandu and start the trek right after a day of your arrival because of flight cancellations due to unfavorable weather conditions.

It is wise to follow 12-Day standard EBC Trekking itinerary (To and From Lukla) to avoid AMS and have smooth trekking experience.

Best Seasons for Everest Base Camp Trek?

Everest Base Camp Trek best times/months/seasons are  Spring (March, April, May) and Autumn (September, October, November). EBC Trekking in other months can be the hardest because of  heavy snowfall in Winter (December, January, February) and heavy rains in Summer (June, July, August).

Do I need travel Insurance? How likely is altitude sickness?

Of course! it’s RECOMMENDED to purchase travel insurance and make sure it covers emergency evacuation at high altitude. Altitude sickness can attack anyone no matter your fitness level is good, the solution is to take time and walk slow. If you feel AMS, it is suggested to go to the lower elevation.

Does the EBC cost same as foreigners to the Indian and Nepalese Citizens?

Well, the trekking cost (accommodation, guide/porter fees, food) remains the same. However, due to flight fare and permit fees (less than the other citizens), it will cost cheaper than foreign citizens. The cost will be less by nearly 200 US dollar than the standard quotation mentioned on the package. Make us an inquiry for the updated cost for Indian and Nepalese trekkers.

Others Everest treks Everest Base Camp via Gokyo Lakes and Everest 3 Passes Trek are suggested itineraries if you can allow couple of weeks in the mountains.

HimalayanWindows (HW) is always concerned in terms of guest’s safety & health situation during the journey to Mount Everest Base Camp Trek. We always give updated and reliable information about the best seasons to trek, route, itinerary, cost, risk & liabilities, insurance, altitude sickness, many more while consulting with us in the shortest time possible.

It is my pleasure to write this review for Himalayan Windows. I normally go solo whenever I want to hike, trek, climb or just travel overseas but a friend of mine recommended Himalayan Windows to me when she knew I was planning to go to Nepal as she’d had a good experience using Himalayan Windows for her Langtang trek last year. So, I decided to give it a try and I’m very pleased with the outcome. Himalayan Windows recently arranged my Everest Base Camp including Kala Patthar trek with a high standard trek quality but for a far cheaper price than any other agencies’ prices on this planet. Anup, the founder of the Himalayan Windows, warmly welcomed me at the airport, and provided one of the best hotels in Thamel prior to/and after my trek. He also gave me advices on where to buy trekking gears in Thamel. Himalayan Windows is very professional. When my flight from Kathmandu to Lukla was cancelled 2 days in a row due to very bad weather in Lukla, Anup still provided a very nice hotel in Thamel for 2 additional nights without any extra costs. Before my flight got cancelled again on day 3, he had arranged a helicopter ride for me and my guide from Kathmandu to Lukla so that I could start my EBC trek, otherwise Everest would have to wait for me. Himalayan Windows is also very helpful, accommodating and flexible. I called Anup on the mountain after reaching EBC & Kala Phattar to change my route and destination last minute, and Anup happily accommodated and fulfilled all my needs. He called my guide, and myself regularly on the mountain to check my condition and to know how I was. He also helped my sister a lot when I was on the mountain providing her with tea houses/lodges’ names and phone numbers so that my sister could call me, as she wanted to know how I was. After climbing down the mountain, when I was back in Kathmandu, I asked a very last minute request for him before dawn to arrange a car and a driver for my Kathmandu sightseeing and he quickly arranged everything for me just after the sun rose. My last night in Kathmandu was closed by a delicious traditional Nepali dinner treated by Himalayan Windows. What I also like from Himalayan Windows is that Anup doesn’t treat me like his client but more like his friend ? Overall I’m certain that my experience exploring Himalaya wouldn’t have been half this good had I not had Himalayan Windows as the agency that arranged my trek. It is without hesitation that I highly recommend Himalayan Windows to anyone who wants to trek Himalayas in Nepal or just wants to do Kathmandu sightseeing as they have an experienced team with right skills and passion to make a difference in the lives of trekkers and travellers. If I ever return to Nepal in the future, I will definitely use Himalayan Windows to arrange more treks for me. All the best for Himalayan Windows! Cheers, -Cicilya-
